- Description:
- A Georgia statute ordered white adults to ride the roads at night, stopping all enslaved people they encountered and making them prove that they were engaged in lawful activities. Patrollers required enslave people to produce a pass, which stated their owner's name as well as where and when they were allowed to be away from the plantation and for how long.
Image of a drawing depicting two white men acting as slave patrollers. They stand on the road, and one of the men holds a rifle. In the foreground a slave runs away from them. He holds his hat on his head with his right hand.
