During Johnson's long editorship, from 1889 until 1954, the newspaper covered the injustices of the Jim Crow era, including segregation, lynchings, and the convict lease system. The Savannah Tribune, a weekly newspaper covering news and issues related to Savannah's African American community, was founded in 1875.
