- Inspired by Florence Nightingale, Kate Cumming served as a nurse during the Civil War. She treated wounded Confederate soldiers in numerous field hospitals throughout Georgia. After the war she published a chronicle of her wartime nursing experiences.
Photograph of Kate Cumming, who spent much of the latter half of the Civil War (1861-65) as a nurse in hospitals throughout Georgia. She wears a dark high-necked dress with a patterned placket. Her hair is parted down the middle, and she faces forward.
Inspired by Florence Nightingale, Cumming is best known for her dedicated service to sick and wounded Confederate soldiers. For the war's duration, she was officially enlisted in the Confederate Army Medical Department. After the war she published a chronicle of her wartime nursing experiences. - Metadata URL:
