- Description:
- Encyclopedia article about Congregation Mickve Israel. Congregation Mickve Israel in Savannah is America's third-oldest Jewish congregation, and the oldest Jewish congregation in the South. The founders of the congregation, comprising the largest group of Jews to settle in North America during the colonial period, arrived in Savannah in July 1733 aboard the William and Sarah. Members of the Bevis Marks Synagogue in London, England, financed the trip for the Jews, who had fled the European continent.
