- From the scrapbook: "Lieutenant Thomas Gary Sikes, Mercer alumnus, was killed in action in Vietnam on December 20, 1968. Lieutenant Sikes was the first and only Mercer ROTC graduate to be killed in active combat operations. The Student Government Association has initiated action requesting that the drill field used by the Mercer ROTC as a parade ground be designated 'Sikes Field' in memory of Lieutenant Sikes." The dedication ceremonies were held on May 30, 1970. This scrapbook was provided to the archives of Mercer University for digitization by Mrs. Judy McGarity Sikes, who holds the original item.
