- Caption label from exhibit "American Treasures Memory": General Sherman in Savannah. On December 23, 1864, the Union Army under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman occupied and captured Savannah. Artist William Waud captured Sherman reviewing his army in Savannah before moving on to his next campaigns in South Carolina and North Carolina. Like his brother Alfred, William was recognized as one of the great sketch artists of the Civil War period.
