- Emily Wooley Barber. Photograph of Emily Wooley Barber. Emily Wooley Barber was the wife of Major Truman Barber. Major Barber was ordered by the U. S. Government to lead twenty companies in the removal of the Cherokee Indians from Georgia to lands west of the Mississippi River. This so-called "Trail of Tears" began in October 1838.
