- Description:
- Gainesville Municipal Airport. Gainesville Municipal Airport, now the Lee Gilmer Airport, is located on the Southern Railway, beyond Gainesville Mill and within 1 1/2 miles from the center of town. Work began on the field in 1928. In 1944 the Naval Department allocated funds for expansion, and the Naval Air Navigation was located there for a few years.
