- Confederate Monument "Old Joe" after the 1936 tornado. Photograph taken of the Confederate monument "Old Joe" after the 1936 tornado. Buildings and trees around the public square did not survive. The National Guard and soldiers erected tents on the square and aided Gainesville citizens with the injured and with clean-up operations.
