- Dr. Banks, born in Elbert County, GA, moved to Gainesville, 1832. He was employed by the Federal Government to treat the Indians. He became a prominent surgeon and performed numerous cataract operations. Banks County was named for him. Dr. Banks and wife, Martha Butts, were buried in Alta Vista Cemetery.
