- Description:
- National Guard checkpoint, April 1936. The cleanup effort is shown. In order to avoid violence and looting, the Georgia National Guard kept a vigilant watch both day and night over the storm area. On Sunday, a count of automobiles showed that 1,500 automobiles an hour came into Gainesville on the main highway. It was estimated that 300,000 people visited Gainesville on that Sunday. The tornado struck the previous Monday.
