- The county courthouse, city hall, and practically all the business district were in ruins after the tornado struck Gainesville on Monday morning, April 6, 1936. The water mains were useless and the fire department buried in rubbles while black smoke from fires billowed from two business blocks. From Brice, W. M. City Laid Waste. C. 1936, 1964.
