- Description:
- Florence Kessler, area midwife. Florence Kessler was a midwife, and for nearly half a century, she delivered babies throughout the Hall, Banks, and Jackson County areas. Some 500 Hall Countians - black and white - were ushered into the world by Florence Kessler. She was 22 years old when she started delivering babies in about 1914. Sometimes she would deliver the babies and let the people pay her anyway they could, often in the form of canned good chickens, eggs, and dairy products or fresh vegetables. In the early days, her husband, William "Bill" Kesler, would travel to the homes of expectant parents in their horse and buggy.
