- Description:
- Photograph of Guy Appleby, church patriarch. Guy Appleby was born in Jefferson, Georgia in 1889, and christened Luther Love Eugene Guy. As a youngster growing up on a farm, he developed an interest in architecture and landscaping, loved gardening, and taught himself carpentry. He married Amanda Jackson, and subsequently moved from Jefferson to Gainesville, Georgia in 1921. As an A.M.E. deacon and elder, he was a great supporter of the A.M.E. church, remaining affiliated with the institution for the remainder of his lifetime. He bought his first home on 2 Boone Street, which was destroyed by a tornado in 1936. He rebuilt the home in 1936-1937. The Applebys' seven children became Methodist, Baptist, and Catholic according to their individual inclination.
