- Description:
- Georgia Representative Stacey Abrams was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and grew up in Mississippi. She earned her bacherlor's degree from Spelman College in Georgia, her master's degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, and her J.D. from the Yale Law School. Abrams worked as Deputy City Attorney for Atlanta, and then began entrepreneurial ventures, including a consulting firm and a financial services firm. Abrams has been recognized by multiple organizations for leadership and entrepreneurship. She has represented Georgia’s 89th District in the Georgia House of Representatives since 2007, and has served as House Minority Leader since 2011. Abrams is also a published author of eleven romance-suspense novels, under the penname Selena Montgomery.
Stacey Abrams compares traditional public, magnet, and charter schools and their differences in jurisdiction and funding. She discusses the proposed legislation for Opportunity School Districts, that if passed, would group Georgia's failing schools into one district under supervision of the governor. Abrams, discusses this issue, and its consequences for accountability and the concentration of executive power. Abrams also discusses voter registration, the importance of the Voter Registration Act, and her work in promoting voter registration in Georgia, specifically through her non-profit, New Georgia Project. She comments on the trends in reapportionment and redistricting in Georgia, their effect on representation of community issues and minority voices, and the outlook of a plan to create a redestricting commission in the Legislature. Abrams describes transportation initiatives in Georgia, funding for transportation infrastructure, and the role of mass transit, such as MARTA, in the metro-Atlanta area. Abrams also discusses the challenges to Medicaid expansion in Georgia, the comparison of its benefits versus costs, and the way in which it can spur grassroots demand for accountability from legislators.
