- Description:
- Phil Wise was born in Plains, Georgia, and earned his bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He worked as a campaign aid in Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign and later was selected as his Appointments Ssecretary. After the Carter Administration, Wise worked for Florida Governor Lawton Chiles. He then returned to Atlanta and worked in the position of Vice-President of Operations at the Carter Center.
Phil Wise recalls growing up in Plains, Georgia, and having Jimmy Carter as his Sunday school teacher. He discusses attending the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) beginning in 1970, interning in the office of Governor Jimmy Carter, and his reaction to learning of Carter’s decision to run for president. He discusses being selected to work on Carter’s presidential campaign, and describes his campaign duties, including organizing the Florida Democratic Primary in 1976 and managing the Southern base of the campaign leading up to the election day. Wise recalls working as Carter’s Appointments Secretary, including the memorable moment when he met Hank Aaron in the White House. He describes Carter’s workday, Carter’s relationship with Congress, and Hamilton Jordan’s personality and leadership style. Wise recalls helping the Carter Family move back to Georgia, participating in the preliminary initiative for the creation of the Carter Center, and returning to work as Vice-President of Operations at the Carter Center in the 1990s.
