- Chuck Clay recalls his childhood growing up in a military family. He discusses several members of his family and their service in many American wars. Clay explains why he decided to study law instead of pursuing a military career like his father and grandfather did. He recalls attending law school at the University of Georgia and subsequently applying for a job at the Solicitor's Office in Marietta. Clay recalls his decision to run for a commissioner seat in West Cobb in 1986. He discusses party politics in Georgia and recalls his impression of both Republicans and Democrats at that time. Clay also discusses the influence of the Voting Rights Act on both parties in Georgia. Clay discusses his run for state senate in 1988. He recalls some lessons he learned as a legislator and the friendships he cultivated. Clay discusses his memory of Culver Kidd, Zell Miller, and Tom Murphy. Clay recalls serving as the minority leader in the state Senate and discusses his work in that capacity.
Charles C. "Chuck" Clay was born in Tampa, Florida, on December 23, 1950. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He received his law degree from the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, he went to work as assistant solicitor in Marietta. He went on to become district attorney, and then, in 1986, commissioner, for Cobb County. In 1988, Clay was elected to the Georgia State Senate as a Republican. After his election, Clay served as chairman of the Cobb County Legislative Delegation and minority leader. He went on to serve six terms in the senate. In 2000 he was chairman of the Georgia Republican Party during George W. Bush's campaign for the presidency. He has served as a partner at the law firm of Brock Clay, LLC.
