- Description:
- The Coca-Cola Bottling Company-Athens, known today as the Bottleworks, is a complex of seven buildings on Prince Avenue, constructed between 1903 and 1955, reflecting the growing demand for Coca-Cola products. Its 2003 restoration won awards for excellence in rehabilitation from The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and excellence in community revitalization from the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation. The centerpiece of the building is the 1928 two-story Colonial-Revival-style bottling plant designed by architect John William Barnett. This building housed the bottling room and offices, while four historic warehouses lined Meigs and Newton Streets. The complex also included garages and other additions built over the years. In 2003, the site was rehabilitated into retail, office, and loft apartments, which involved removing steel warehouses and constructing a new apartment building. The rehabilitation aimed to preserve the historic buildings, with five contributing structures including the original bottling plant and four warehouses, and two non-contributing buildings from later additions and renovations. Walter Sams established the Coca-Cola Bottling Company on Prince Avenue in 1928, marking the third location for the Athens company. By 1955, the complex produced 2,000 cases a day and employed thirty men. The company remained privately owned until 1985 when it was acquired by Coca-Cola Enterprises. The architecture of the complex is significant as it represents pre-standardized Coca-Cola bottling facilities. Barnett's design, with its Colonial Revival details and storefront windows reflects early 20th-century commercial architecture. The site's significance also lies in its representation of an important industrial enterprise in downtown Athens and an efficient model of an early Coca-Cola bottling and distribution franchise. The period of significance for the site is 1928-1955, the range of time between the establishment of the company and the completion of the construction of its historic buildings.
