- Description:
- From the 1987 National Trust for Historic Places application form prepared by Andrea Niles, Survey and Research Specialist, Georgia Department of Natural Resources: St. Mark United Methodist Church holds significance in both architecture and art. Architecturally, it stands as one of Atlanta's few remaining early 20th-century Gothic style granite churches and is one of three extant churches designed by Atlanta architect Willis F. Denny (1874-1905). Built in 1903, notable architectural features include original heavy wood doors, granite wall construction, lancet-arched windows, wall buttresses, and polygonal towers with a belfry. The interior boasts original pews, wainscoting, pilasters, doors, baseboards, molding, and stained glass windows. Artistically, the church is significant for its stained glass windows, some crafted by Franz Mayer of Munich (Mayer's che Hofkunstanstalt GmbH) in Munich, Germany, using the pot-metal glass technique, enhancing luminosity and color clarity. St. Mark's also has potential significance to Atlanta's religious and social history due to its association with a mission in the "Tight Squeeze" community and its early pastor, Warren A. Candler, who later became a Southern Methodist bishop and president of Emory College. Variant names include: St Mark's Methodist Church, St. Mark United Methodist Church.
