- Description:
- Built in 1785 by New Jersey émigré Thomas Ansley (1737-1809) near the Quaker community of Wrightsborough in McDuffie County (named after Georgia governor James Wright (1716-1785)). The building is a simple stone structure with a peaked roof and chimneys on either end of the house, and reflects the style of architecture found in New Jersey and New England. Although many Quakers had become abolitionists in the 19th century, in the 17th and 18th centuries, they still enslaved people, Thomas Ansley among them. He emigrated to Wrightsboro Georgia in 1768 with a group of 40 Quaker families from North Carolina who sought to move to Georgia because it tolerated Quakerism. Naturalist William Bartram (1739-1823) visited the community in 1773. Rock House is the only surviving structure from Wrightsboro' s once-thriving Quaker community, and is considered to be Georgia's oldest standing building with intact original architecture. The Quaker community is no more. Variant names include: Old Rock House, Rock House.
