- Description:
- The Eagle Tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Watkinsville, Georgia's stagecoach stop opened in 1801, though the building structure dates back to 1789. In the early 1800s, the city of Watkinsville was the original county seat of Clarke County, perched on the frontier of both Creek and Cherokee territories, and the Tavern served as a frontier stop on a stagecoach line before the advent of railroads. Richard C. Richardson purchased the tavern in 1836 and made additions to the original structure, but in the building's restoration, these were removed to better situate the building's pre-Civil War, pre-railroad-era furnishings from its busiest days. The old part of the building is of logs with original wide boards covering them inside and out. The rest of the building is comprised of a two-story wood frame structure on a brick foundation. Inside are three staircases. The building housed a hotel until about 1930. It was saved from destruction in 1934 by Lanier Richardson Billups, retired postmaster of Decatur, Georgia, who deeded it to the state in 1956, to remember the three generations of his family that operated the inn.
