- Description:
- The 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse is the oldest public building in North Georgia and the oldest extant courthouse in Georgia in its original form (the old Government House in Augusta is older, though heavily modified). Ephraim Clayton employed bricks made from Cane Creek (Colonel Baker's farm in Yahoolo Valley) which included trace amounts of gold. A branch of the United States Mint was opened just south of the courthouse in 1838. By 1849, many of Dahlonega’s miners were bound for California's newer and more fruitful Gold Rush. The courthouse served Lumpkin County for over 125 years. In 1966 the building was given to the state in 1966; now serving as the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site. For more information see Linley, John. The Georgia Catalog: Historic American Buildings Survey. Athens, Ga.: University of Georgia Press, c1982, p. 292. Variant names include: Dahlonega Courthouse.
