- Description:
- The Chief Vann house was built around 1805 for Cherokee leader James Clement Vann. During the 1790s, Cherokee leader James Vann, a wealthy planter, established the largest and most profitable plantation in the Cherokee Nation, covering 1,000 acres of what is now Murray County. Vann was murdered in 1809 and succeeded by his son Joseph, who inherited the property. However, by the 1830s, the Vann family lost their home, and nearly the entire Cherokee Nation was forced onto the infamous Trail of Tears to vacate their ancestral homes and rebuild what they could in the Cherokee Territory of Oklahoma. Today the Vann House survives as one of Georgia’s best-preserved historic Cherokee homes. Variant names include: Chief Vann House.
