- Description:
- Azira Hill was born in 1923 in Cuba. Hill worked as a nurse at Grady Hospital Educational Department, and was involved with several public schools in the Atlanta area. After her retirement, Hill remained an active member of Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Hill also founded the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Talent Development Program at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and is now a lifetime member.
In this interview, Hill discusses her life as a civil rights activist alongside her husband, Jesse Hill. She describes early life in Atlanta, discrimination and segregation, the integration efforts in which she was involved, and the civil rights movements which she and her husband supported by bailing out arrested protesters. She discusses her husband's work around the city as a consultant and advisor, her work as one of the first Black voter registrars, and their combined efforts to change Atlanta for the better. - Metadata URL:
