- Letter written from Mobile, Alabama, and signed Augusta Evans Wilson. Augusta Evans married Confederate veteran Colonel Lorenzo Madison Wilson in 1868. The letter is in response to a question about the relationship of the characters in Wilson's novel, St. Elmo, to real people. The text of the letter: "In reply to your courteous note of the 14th, permit me to say, that "St. Elmo" is entirely a work of fiction, and its characters and incidents have no existence beyond the realm of imagination." Letter written in purple ink on wove paper watermarked with a crown, under which is written "Irish Linen." The letter is mounted into an 1867-printing of St. Elmo.
