- In 1960 apartments made up only 17.9 percent of the total housing inventory in the metropolitan area. Since 1960, 40.1 percent of all residential construction has been multi-family. The map illustrates how apartment units have shared in total residential construction in each of 10 major areas of the five-county region. Of the areas delineated, only Sandy Springs and the City of Atlanta have over 50 percent of 1960 - 1969 construction in multi-family units.
