- Samuel H. Smith, Sr. is a deacon at Mt. Zion Second Baptist Church, grew up in Buttermilk Bottoms, and is actively involved in the Buttermilk Bottoms reunion group and its activities. Smith and his family lived on Pine Place in Buttermilk Bottoms. He attended C. W. Hill Elementary School and David T. Howard High School. His family moved to the Westside of Atlanta in the wake of the neighborhood's demise. Smith is a Bus Manager at MARTA and has been employed by the organization since its inception.
From his home in Southwest Atlanta, Smith provides a detailed story of growing up in Buttermilk Bottoms. He outlines streets and locations in the community, and locates these sites on maps in the Planning Atlanta Collection. He recalls being a bicycle delivery boy in the community as a child. His interview places emphasis on the integrity and cohesiveness that existed in Buttermilk Bottoms. He vividly remembers Pine Place, the street he grew up on, along with the schools and business in the area. He details the commercial district along Forrest Avenue, along with other shops and restaurants on streets within the community. His discussion also emphasizes the role of the church in community development and its role in mobilizing and educating residents on the processes of urban renewal.
