- Pamela Flores is from Honduras, Central America and has been in Georgia since 1984. She attended Georgia State University and Emory University where she received a Master of Arts in Teaching. She is a current resident of Vine City and a community activist. She is the CEO of HELP.ORG, Inc.; part of its mission "is to serve and preserve in-place residence, small businesses, and their successive generations in redeveloping their communities."
Flores has an in-depth, historical understanding of the changes Vine City has undergone. She contends that after the 1960s, in the wake of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, there was a huge decline in neighborhoods like Vine City. Prior to these gains, Vine City was home to some affluent African American families, including the adult home of Martin Luther King Jr. The aftermath of the 1960s caused massive displacement, a decline in small businesses, a lack of transportation routes from services like MARTA, an increase in unemployment and incarceration, school closings, white flight, dilapidated homes, and drugs. These factors contributed to Vine City's underdevelopment. Despite this, Flores' HELP.ORG in conjunction with Community Land Trust agencies is combating the displacement of residents.
