- At the beginning of this interview, Ms. Klein clarifies how she is related to Johnny Mercer. She then talks about her memories of Mercer, including a visit to see him in California when she was six years old, a visit by Mercer to Savannah when she was about ten, and a trip to New York when she was sixteen. She also mentions Mercer's visit to see her when she was a student at Swarthmore College. In the course of the conversation, she talks briefly about Johnny Mercer's last visit to Savannah and his final illness. She also makes some passing references to Ginger Mercer. At the end of the conversation, Ms. Klein speaks about the Mercer house on Vernon View, her own life on the islands, and the development of Savannah island properties since Mercer's boyhood.
Ann Mercer Klein (b. 1939) is the daughter of George Walter Mercer, the second son of Johnny Mercer's father by his first wife. Ms. Klein grew up in Savannah and attended Swarthmore College. She later returned to Georgia. - Local Identifier:
