- Mr. McIntire begins by relating his early recollections of Johnny Mercer, who was a close friend of the McIntire family. McIntire then talks about a later occasion, during World War II, when as a young man he spent the Christmas holidays with the Mercers in Hollywood. He also includes other anecdotes about visits to Johnny Mercer in New York during the premiere of Saratoga, the wedding of Mercer's cousin Walter Rivers to McIntire's sister Cornelia, and the Mercers' visits to Savannah. In the course of the conversation, McIntire reflects briefly on the character and personality of both Johnny and Ginger Mercer. Works by Mercer that are mentioned include, among others, Saratoga, "I'm An Old Cowhand" and "Accentuate the Positive."
Pope Barrow McIntire was born in Savannah, Georgia, on October 7, 1924, the youngest of six children of Frances Percival McIntire and Lucy Barrow McIntire. After graduating from Swarthmore College (1945) and the University of Georgia Law School (1947), he served for several years as an associate lawyer with the firm of Jones, Williams, and Dorsey in Atlanta. He became a partner at the law firm of King and Spalding in Atlanta in 1953. - Local Identifier:
