- Description:
- Theo DeVinney was born in 2002 in Atlanta, Ga. He is a high school student at The Galloway School in Atlanta. On January 21, 2017, millions of people worldwide took part in marches to protest the inauguration of Donald Trump as the President of the United States. The first protest, which took place in Washington, D.C., was known as the Women's March on Washington and was intended as a response to anti-woman rhetoric and beliefs that were espoused during Trump's campaign. While women's and reproductive rights were at the forefront of marchers' concerns, many also protested the racist, anti-immigrant, anti-science, and other controversial sentiments expressed by the incoming Trump administration.
In this interview, Theo DeVinney describes his experience at the Atlanta March for Social Justice and Women, which he attended with his parents and friends. He describes being motivated to march to express his support of LGBTQ rights, and he discusses how his perspective as a gay transgender man informs his political views. DeVinney talks about his hope that people will be spurred by life under the Trump administration to educate themselves about issues of oppression, and he discusses his fears of what Trump's regressive policies could mean for LGBTQ people in America. He offers advice for others who are interested in attending marches in the future, and describes how attending this march affected him. - Metadata URL:
