- Description:
- One of two photographs made by J.H. "Jack" Lane on April 13, 1943. Lily Pons (1898-1976) was in Atlanta to promote the World-War-II war effort. On April 10, she had appeared at the Georgia Terrace Hotel on behalf of the War Bond Drive. In these two photographs, Pons is holding the flag of Free France (France libre). Born and reared in France, Pons became a U.S. citizen in 1940. There is a well-known photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt of Lily Pons singing in the finale of the Figlia del regimento on November 23, 1942 at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. In that photograph she is also holding the flag of France libre. The Lane Brothers 1943 Assignment Book (page 55) records this commission as being made for Pons and billed to Martin McDonald at his office at 235 Peachtree Street in Atlanta. The Assignment Book lists the total cost as $6.00, and includes the line "Silvermine, Norwalk, Connecticut," where Pons had a house in the Silvermine Artists Colony.
