- Description:
- One in a series of 9 photos made by Charles Jackson of the Maryland State School for the Deaf's team, Youth Silents and another, unidentified team. The series was commissioned by George Merrill for the Gadsden, Alabama subsiderary of Standard-Coosa-Thatcher Company. The tournament took place at Sacred Heart School Gymnasium. The series includes one photo of player with jersey number 12 (perhaps Wallace McCue?). Two team photos (one with coach) of the unidentified players. The six action shots show members of one team wearing jerseys marked "Youth Silents," the name of the basketball team at the Maryland School for the Deaf. The Youth Silents sent "its basketball team to participate in the S.E.A.A.D. [Southeast Athletic Association of the Deaf, sometimes written, 'South East Athletic Association of the Deaf'] Tourney held at Atlanta, Georgia, February 29 and March 1 [1952]. .. The District of Columbia Club of the Deaf took first place and we were contented with the sixth place trophy." ("Alumni and Other Deaf," by James A. Barrack, in The Maryland Bulletin (Frederick, Md.), Vol. LXXII, no. 6 (March 1952), p. 72.). The Lane Brothers 1952 Assignment Book (p. 90) has listing: "George Merrill Standard Cosa Thatcher Company. Gadsden, Ala. Photo Mute Basketball Team. Photo of Action-Individual-Team Shots. Sacred Heart Gym Wallace McCue -- $25.00. Charles Jackson." It is unclear if the tournament was held at Sacred Heart gymnasium in Atlanta (school now closed) or school in McClellan, Alabama, close to Gadsden.
