- Description:
- Charles McGee was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1919. He spent his childhood in Ohio, Chicago, and Iowa. He attended the University of Illinois, but left before graduating and entered Army Air Corps training. He graduated from Tuskegee Army Air Field as a single engine pilot and second lieutenant in 1943. Colonel McGee remained on active duty for thirty years, through World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. After retiring from the military, McGee finished his BA in Business Administration at Columbia College in Kansas City, Mo. and managed the Downtown Airport in Kansas City. He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2011.
In this interview, Charles McGee begins by discussing his childhood and his segregated education. He discusses entering the University of Illinois, then leaving to enter Air Corps training at Tuskegee University. He discusses his time in Europe during World War II and his subsequent Air Corps experiences in Korea and Vietnam. He also discusses how race played a role in his military service. McGee discusses returning to school and managing an airport in his post-military life. The interview concludes with a general discussion of the many achievement awards Colonel McGee has received. - Metadata URL:
