- Tom Payne was born in Cave Spring, Georgia in 1937. His parents were farmers. In 1958, Payne moved to Atlanta to complete an apprenticeship with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. He was initiated into Local Union 72, United Association, in June of 1959. He served on the Plumbers Examining Board from the late 1960s until the early 1970s). Subsequently, Payne became the business manager for UA 72 and an international representative for the United Association.
In this interview, Payne begins discussing his first labor union leadership roles. He discusses getting elected to be the Plumbers Business Agent of Local 72 and describes his duties within that role. He discusses negotiations he dealt with during this job. He discusses becoming the business manager of Local 72 in 1975, a position he held until 1991. He also discusses his participation in the North Georgia Building Trades Council and the Georgia State AFL-CIO. In 1981, Payne became vice president of the international and stayed in position for 10 years. In 1991, he became a full-time international representative for the UA. He concludes the interview by discussing retiring and hopes for labor futures. - Metadata URL:
