- Description:
- Doyle Howard was born near Sand Mountain, Alabama where he was raised on a farm with eleven brothers and sisters. Graduating from high school in 1956, Howard moved to Marietta, Georgia shortly afterward to work at Lockheed Aircraft. Initially working on B47 Bombers as a Helper and then an Assembly Installer, Howard joined the union at Lockheed shortly after being hired. He later served in the National Guard and worked for the Atlanta Transit Company. Upon meeting his wife, Howard moved back to Alabama in 1963 and began working for Boaz Spinning Company. Fired for promoting union activity, Howard went to work at Hayes Aircraft in Birmingham for two years, then returned to Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta where he became a shop steward. After a short stint running a golf course in Floyd County, Howard began working for Georgia Power Company at Plant Bowen in 1973. By 1974, Howard was elected shop steward and began a long career in union work. In 1980, Howard became Assistant Business Manager, and in 1986 was elected Business Manager, a position he held for a total of 24 years.
Howard describes his childhood living on a farm in Alabama, and his father’s vocal support of labor unions. He goes on to describe his early jobs following graduation from high school, which included work at Lockheed Aircraft, Atlanta Transit Company, Boaz Spinning Company, and Hayes Aircraft. Howard describes his 30+ year career with I.B.E.W Local 84 while working at Georgia Power Company and his successes and failures as Business Manager. - Metadata URL:
