- Jim Gwin was born in Houston, Texas in 1943. His family moved to Indianola, Mississippi when he was a child. He attended Harvard University and the University of Wisconsin. Gwin later moved to Atlanta, where he joined the staff of The Great Speckled Bird. He later moved to California and became a teacher.
In this interview, Jim Gwin describes growing up in Indianola, Mississippi, during a time of great racial tension. He talks about the emergence of his political consciousness as an adolescent and young adult. He discusses his undergraduate and graduate education, including his getting involved with journalism and activism. Gwin talks about moving to Atlanta as part of the Americorps VISTA program and eventually joining the Great Speckled Bird. He discusses his time with the Bird, becoming a father, and his eventual departure from the Bird. - Metadata URL:
