- Description:
- Ted Brodek was born in Tel Aviv, Palestine on May 21, 1942. He grew up there during the Arab-Israeli War. His parents were German-Jewish refugees to Palestine in 1933 and they immigrated to the United States in the 1950s. Brodek was eight years old when he immigrated to the United States. He grew up in Forest Hills, New York, but later moved to Atlanta in the August of 1967 and began teaching at Emory in September of that year. He taught for four years, but later decided that he was not cut out for the academic world. He became involved with the Great Speckled Bird when it was first launched in March of 1968.
Ted Brodek discusses his family background as well as his educational background before he joined the Great Speckled Bird. He talks about working at Emory University and his involvements with the Bird at the time. Brodek discusses various aspects of the Bird such as censorship, drug culture, relationships, and life after leaving the Bird.
The Great Speckled Bird was published from 1968 to 1976 with some issues appearing in the 1980s and 2000s. This publication was one of the longest-running and highest quality underground newspapers of the era. Frequently published were articles on Atlanta's political leaders, the women's movement, abortion, racial issues, popular culture and gay liberation. - Metadata URL:
