- Description:
- A brief "I told you so" address following the collapse of Continental Airlines. With the news of this major competitor's bankruptcy, Borman feels vindicated for his dire predictions and cautious management style in the face of deregulation. He had predicted that if Eastern attempted to fly through a machinists' strike they would collapse in about 2 weeks, and indicates that Continental went under during the fourth week of a machinists' strike. The more specific point of his address is to offer context for a vote being circulated for an upcoming proposal altering the employee benefit package. He notes that Eastern has lost $100 million in revenue this year, and discusses their three options. First, shut the airline down and preserve the cash that we had to dispose of the assets and appease the creditors. Second, file for protective under Chapter 11 under the bankruptcy act to see if they could continue to operate under onerous restrictions. Third, reduce the basic cost structure of the airline, with 75% of the controllable costs being labor related. He urges those listening to vote in favor of the reduced benefits as though their jobs depended on it.
