- Note on verso states: Brother W. R. Mitchell, member of District Lodge 100, has volunteered for service in the Belgian Congo, announced President and General Chairman George M. Brown, District 100. Mitchell, 31 years old, is a licensed mechanic and a graduate of District 100 Joint Apprenticeship Program at Eastern Air Lines, Inc. He will serve as a crew cheif on DC-4 and C-46 aircraft under the auspices of the United Nations stationed at Leopoldville, Belgian Congo, for a duration of three months. These aircraft have been chartered from Panama Airways, Inc. to the United Nations organization, ONUC (Organization-Nations, United Congo). Mitchell started at Eastern Air Lines as an aircraft cleaner six years ago. He completed his apprenticeship as an aviation mechanic two years ago and has varied experience on all types of commercial multi-engine aircraft. Filed under: Eastern Airlines Apprentices.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Photograph Collection largely consists of black and white 8x10" photographs which were used in the union's publications, the ""Machinists Monthly Journal"" and later, the ""Machinist."" The Photograph Collection includes the following IAMAW-related subject matter: Locals, Districts, Officers, Anniversaries, Conventions, Conferences, Ladies Auxiliary, strikes, the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League, and Machinists at work on trains, tanks, aircraft, missiles, etc. Additional subject matter includes the AFL-CIO, other unions, union/labor leaders, world leaders, political figures, religious leaders, current events, and celebrities. Of note are extensive files on Gerald Ford, Hubert Humphrey, missile construction, the Convair Corporation, the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League, and the Ladies Auxiliary.
The United Machinists and Mechanical Engineers of America was founded in 1888. In 1889, the name changed to the National Association of Machinists. Two years later, it became known as the International Association of Machinists and in 1965, this was changed to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. - Metadata URL:
