- Margery "Jerry" Downey was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. She received her BA in English Literature from Swarthmore College in 1950 and between 1969 and 1970, went on to take a number elementary education courses in New Jersey. Throughout her professional career, she has held positions as junior executive in a department store, assistant to her physician father, teachers aide (1969-1974), sales representative for a life insurance company (1980-1983), and sales and customer service representative for Service Foods,Inc. (1983-). Downey was involved with ERA Georgia during the 1970s and 1980s and has been a long-time member of the League of Women Voters in Montclaire, N.J. and in Savannah, Georgia. She has held a number of offices with the League, including president, education chair, and membership director. Downey has also been a member of the Older Women's League for several years.
