Shelly Charles, veteran Atlanta airline pilot, as he proved Wednesday afternoon when he soaared aloft on the first sailplane flight ever made at Candler Field. Here's his take-off. His motorless plane is towed aloft kite-fashion by a 1,500-foot rope attached to an automobile; then, at an altitude of 500 feet, the rope is dropped and the plane rides the currents. -- Journal photo." Stamped "Jul 23" and inscribed "'39."
