- Newspaper caption attached to print verso: "The buzzards have nothing on Capt. Shelly Charles, veteran Atlanta airline pilot, as he proved Wednesday afternoon when he soaared aloft on the first sailplane flight ever made at Candler Field. Here's his take-off. His motorless plane is towed aloft kite-fashion by a 1,500-foot rope attached to an automobile; then, at an altitude of 500 feet, the rope is dropped and the plane rides the currents. -- Journal photo." Stamped "Jul 23" and inscribed "'39."
