- Description:
- Number two in a series of nine photographic prints sent to the Atlanta Journal Magazine from the Headquarters, Georgia Military District (101 Cone Street, Atlanta 3, Georgia) on March 29, 1948. Transmittal letter from Rex R. Kerr, Captain, Asst. Public Information Officer, filed with the prints. The letter states that the prints: "Inclosed [sic] herewith are photos taken at the Contact Camp, March 20-21 at Fort Benning, Ga., at which nearly 500 Reserve Officers attended." The "particulars" of Picture #2: "A group of Atlanta Reserve Officers inspecting an M45 tank. The names reading from left to right are: Col F.A. Kopf, Col L.F. Nickel, Lt Col W.C. White and Col Ed Green, all of Atlanta." The T26E2 with the 105mm howitzer was given the designation of M45 for the close-support role. The M45 Pershing was based on an M26 hull and turret, with a short-barreled 105mm Howitzer replacing the long-barrel 90mm gun. This M45 is named "Iron Mike."
