- Description:
- Newspaper attached to print verso: "Five new buildings are nearly completed at the State Hospital for the Insane at Milledgeville, Ga. The first will be occupied by April 1. All will be ready by June 1. The new quarters will accommodate 2,800 new patients, and relieve present crowding. Seven thousand insane patients now are housed in ancient, outmoded buildings intended for less than 5,000. Some structures in use today are 98 years old and have begun to disintegrate because funds were not provided for repairs. The worst will be torn down. About 1,500 new patients are admitted to the hospital every year. In spite of poor housing, small staff, antiquated equipment and insufficient funds, hospital psychiatrists cure about 80 percent of these within 12 months. Released patients are paroled home for one year." The Georgia State Hospital at Milldegeville was founded as Georgia Lunatic Asylum, 1837; the name changed to Georgia State Sanitarium at Milledgeville, late 1890s; Milledgeville State Hospital, 1929; and Central State Hospital, 1967)
