- Photographic print; newspaper caption attached to print verso: "Butch on Sidelines During Football Game. Owner threatens suit in death of bulldog mascot." Caption stamped "Jun 7 1951." Verso of print stamped "Journal." Before Uga I in 1955, the University of Georgia was represented officially by two bulldogs, Mike (1951-1955) and his predecessor, Butch, who served from 1947 to 1950. Butch was a brindled English bulldog owned by Mabry Smith of Warner Robins, Ga. Smith agreed to loan Butch to the University during the football season. Spending the off-season at Smith’s home in Warner Robins, Butch was shot in the summer of 1951 by a policeman after the dog escaped from his pen and was found roaming the streets.
