- Description:
- Caption: "Photo of the Day: Killer Coates Loses Again. The door of a closed conference room flew open; Journal cameraman Dan Lane cracked down, and it's the Picture of the Day: With surprise all over his face, Charles Coates (second from left), thrice-condemned killer of State Trooper Sergeant Fred Black Jr., whirled around just in time to be snapped in this dramatic scene - just under a framed portrait of his victim which the latter's buddies hung on the wall at State Patrol headquarters. Heading south toward the electric chair after hearing his death date set for the third time (September 5), Coates was in this room Friday, manacled to Catoosa Sheriff Jim Moreland and conferring with his counsel, Joe Turner (left), while another attorney was seeking Sheriff Moreland to serve a writ of habeas corpus that would have tired up the new sentence. When they stopped at Patrol Headquarters the other lawyer missed them by 10 minutes, and they continued later to Tattnall Prison. To right, Cap. S. W. Roper."
