- Printed on assignment sheet: "Mayor Hartsfield and W. Zode Smith, general manager of the city Water Works, yesterday were busy explaining that the smoke belching stack at the Hemphill pumping station, shown above, is a temporary arrangement and is used only in emergencies. The nearly smokeless stack is mechanically fired, while the smoker is hand stoked. The latter, however, will be converted within the next 30 days, Smith said, and then even when it is in use 'about two days a month it will be practically smokeless.' Many persons called the mayor yesterday complaining about the heavy smoke clouds coming from the offending stack, Hartsfield said. (Hankcock...new. Lines for Water Works Smoke cut..."
