All color used is enclosed" Caption: "The Cover: More than 500 varied research projects are underway at Georgia Tech where nearly 500 scientists and engineers are investigating everything from atoms to stars. Here James Darnell, research assistant, is plating metal films onto quartz blanks which are used ultimately in resonators for many types of radio-frequency control systems. The plating of gold, aluminum and silver is accomplished by evaporation. Quartz crystal resonators are found in military radios, ham radios, remote control units, rocket guidance systems and earth satellites. Tech scientists are studying the aging and stability characteristics of quartz resonators. Research projects are paid for by industry, foundation grants and the government."
