- Civic Magazine profiles the efforts of the Savannah Fire Department (SFD) to fight a large fire that broke out on East President St. on the morning of April 10, 1995. The fire broke out at a chemical plant and was deemed a serious emergency. The fire was extinguished early the next morning, but soon reignited and a federal response was initiated with the U.S. Coast Guard being called in for aid. The decision was then made to allow the fire to burn, due to the difficulty of extinguishing it and the toxic chemical gases present that could be released into the air, instead of continuing to be consumed by the fire. Later the next day, the SFD decided to try to extinguish the fire to prevent the black clouds of smoke to be blown over residential areas with changes in the wind.Large amounts of suffocating foam were sprayed onto the fire and the area cooled so that the fire would not reignite, and the fire was extinguished. SFD Chief Joseph E. Hobby is interviewed for the segment. At a press conference on April 12, while the fire continues to emit dark smoke into the atmosphere and cause chemical runoff into the Savannah River, Mayor Susan Weiner speaks to Savannah about the efforts being made to control the fire and keep everyone safe. SFD Chief Hobby and U.S. Coast Guard Commander Watson then take questions from those present. City Manager Michael Brown also speaks about providing water for the city with the river being contaminated.
