- Description:
- Thousands of Savannahians are present to witness the arrival of the Olympic torch in Savannah en route to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The torch arrives for its first time on Georgia soil in a sailing ship and is passed off to a smaller motorboat. The torch is passed from U.S. Olympic star crewmen Hal Haenel and Mark Reynolds to Georgia governor Zell Miller, and then to Savannahian Swann Brannon. Speaking at the ceremony are Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games CEO William Payne and Governor Zell Miller. A choir then sings "The Power of the Dream" as Swann Brannon takes the Olympic torch. The torch is carried by several prominent Savannahians throughout historic parts of the city on its journey to Atlanta. Mayor Floyd Adams, Jr. talks at a ceremony later that day where the torch is brought to light a large Savannah torch, and talks about the meaning of the Olympics for the state of Georgia and the history of the Olympic torch.
